Sticking to your fitness routine can be tough. Sometimes life gets in the way. Use these 3 tips to learn how to make exercise a top priority in your life.
How to Stick to Your Fitness Routine
Sticking to your fitness routine can be tough. If you’re anything like me, you thrive on keeping busy and biting off almost more than you can chew. In fact most of us are so busy that often times exercise is the first thing to get pushed aside. Balancing work, family and social life with a regular exercise routine can be tricky. The stress of everyday life can leave us feeling like doing anything but exercising. However, exercise just may be the key to making sure that all of the other pieces fall into place.
Not only does exercise make us look good, but it makes us feel good too. In fact, regular exercise has the power to help us handle the other aspects of our lives. When we exercise it not only reduces stress and helps us to be better mentally and physically equipped for life, it also boosts our self-efficacy, making us believe in our ability to get things done. After all, if we can get through a super hard workout at 6 AM, we can handle just about anything that life may throw our way.
So instead of letting a hectic life get the best of you, try these three tips to make exercise a habit in your life.
Schedule It-It’s easy to just float through the days getting to things as they arise, but that’s no way to make the most of your time. We are awake for about 16 hours a day. The more of that time that you can plan, the more you will get done. Highly successful people plan out every aspect of their day and don’t waste any of their precious time. So plan your days and make sure that exercise is on your schedule. If you think that your days are completely booked and there is no way to fit a workout in, think again. I’ve found that the best time to workout is first thing in the morning, even if the only way to get it done is to wake up a little earlier. Remember, it’s not about having time, it’s about making time.
Be Passionate-The thought of being on a treadmill for more than five minutes sounds like torture to me. I cringe at the thought of standing around lifting weights. It can be hard to be motivated to do something that you really don’t like doing. So find something that you’re passionate about and make it your reason for getting up at 5 AM! One of the only ways that I have been able to make exercise a top priority in my life is by finding an activity that I absolutely love to do. I even managed to turn it into my job! Maybe you like to play tennis, swim or mountain bike, so spend your time doing the things you love so that working out doesn’t feel like a chore. Sticking to your fitness routine is a lot easier if it’s something that you are passionate about.
They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. Once you’ve got your workout in your schedule, be consistent. Try to schedule it for the same time on the same days. After a few weeks of crossing it off your list, your body will be on autopilot and know just what to do. Another added benefit of being consistent with your workouts is that your body will crave the endorphins that it produces when you exercises and you won’t feel right without making sure that you get some movement in!
Being healthy in both your mind and your body is key to being able to handle the crazy things that life brings your way. No matter how hectic your life may be, find the time to make exercise a top priority. Sticking to your fitness routine is all about being consistent and finding something you love to do!
